Merrin presents a new body of work to challenge perceptions of reality, reflecting contemporary social and political uncertainties.

“Human Tides” is a compelling exhibition of drawings and paintings featuring two acclaimed figurative artists, the Portsmouth-born, London based Joseph Loughborough and London born, Portsmouth based Colin Merrin. Both have achieved significant success nationally and internationally.

This exhibition at The Box Gallery in Southsea, Portsmouth, highlights their unique yet complementary artistic visions.

Joseph Loughborough’s art delves into the complexities of the human condition through his expressive and emotive mark-making. Influenced by the philosophy of absurdity, his works explore themes of emotion, sexuality, and existential contemplation. Figures in his drawings inhabit a space of introspection and unfulfilled desires, prompting viewers to reflect on their own inner struggles and hopes.

Colin Merrin brings a different yet resonant perspective. His recent works focus on the absurdity of meaning as a fixed idea. His paintings and drawings question what is real and what is made up, thus reflecting the political and social uncertainties of our time. His layered technique incorporates collaged text with ink and paint creating a dialogue between the fact and fiction, exploring our collective need for meaning.

Together, Loughborough and Merrin’s works offer a rich interpretation of humanness. Loughborough’s raw, impulsive expressions of the human form complement Merrin’s thoughtful, layered figurations. Both artists invite viewers to engage with themes of identity, emotion, and the search for meaning in an ever-changing world.

Join us at The Box Gallery to experience the powerful synergy of these two artists whose works transcend boundaries and resonate deeply with the human experience.
